Intro of Sambung Nyawa

Gynura procumbens is an herb plant which is using for medicine. It commonly called “sambung nyawa” in Malaysia, It also called as Daun Dewa, Leaves of the Gods, Googoolipid, Mallucan spinach, Am Akar, Akar sebiak, dan Kelemai merah, bai bing coa, ngokilo (Jawa), beluntas cina (Melayu), she juan jao @ fujung jao (Cina). It is often eaten raw with rice (Rosidah, et al., 2008). The old people always eat it and believe it will give a good condition for their health and lifestyle. It founded in Asian country but only in a various part. Like Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia are the country which is having a lot of it. It originally founded from Myanmar and China.

It is grow around 1 to 500 meters from ocean level. It easy to breed from the strip at the medium temperature area around 20 to 30°C which is around 40 % to 50 % source of light and raining around 1500 to 2500 mm. It will survive at soil pH around 5.5 to 7. The physical criterion of this plant is it leaf is alone and thick. It easy to crash, it shaping like egg shell and having grates at outer side of leaf. The flower’s colour is yellow green and not easy to being flowering.

The chemical containing of G. Procumbens is flavanoid (7, 3, 4 trihidroksi – flavon), glichocida kuercetin, fenoleat acid (it consist of cafeat acid, penta kumarat, penta-hidrocide benzoate and vanilate acid) trterpenoid, alchaloid, saponin and thannin.

In Thailand, the aerial part of G. procumbens is used as a topical therapy for the treatment of inflammation, rheumatism and viral diseases of the skin. In Indonesia, the aerial and some other parts are used to treat fevers, skin rashes and as a remedy for ringworm infection. (Iskander, et al., 2002). In Malaysia, it usually use for cancer, kidney problem, diabetes, and constipation.
